CLUB MILLENNIUM: TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Reported in the Anchorage Daily News on May 30, 2005, municipal officials were threatening to revoke permits a club owner needed to throw a dance party, after allowing similar parties in the same club before. The dispute arose only one day before the party. Coffey said his clients had already sent out invitations and invested money in the party. Coffey called on Municipal Manager Denis LeBlanc and the city attorney and urged the city to grant the permit.  Dan claimed that meeting with the city manager and municipal attorney on behalf of Club Millennium was a proper way to straighten out the mess, which he said was caused by a muddled city permitting system.

At the time, the Code of Ethics prohibited Assembly members from representing private interests "before the assembly, school board or other municipal board, commission or agency." Dan Coffey dodged a ethics charge by arguing he did not appear before a municipal "agency" to plead Club Millennium's case; the city’s Ethics Code was later amended to close the loophole Dan used.
